Do Dental Veneers Last Forever?

Dental veneers help to correct issues with tooth discoloration, spacing issues, cracks, wear, and more. They can give you an improved smile while still looking natural. While they have a lifespan, you can enjoy your veneers for years to come with proper care. At Caring Smiles, our Fort Collins, CO dentist applies veneers and assists you with extending the life of them.

How Long Do Veneers Last on Average?

In general, veneers last anywhere between 10 to 15 years. Some last less time while others last longer. How long they last depends on the type of veneer you select as well as how you take care of them.

Porcelain vs. Composite Resin

Porcelain veneers last longer than composite resin ones. They’re stronger and more durable than composite resin ones. They’re less likely to chip, and they’re more resistant to stains. They, however, can’t be repaired once they sustain any damage. On average, with the proper care though, dental veneers can last anywhere between 15 to 20 years.

Composite resin veneers tend to last between five to 10 years. They’re more likely to crack or chip than porcelain. If you drink dark beverages like coffee or red wine frequently or smoke, you may notice discoloration because they don’t resist stains well. If something should happen to your composite resin veneers though, our dentist may be able to repair them.

Extending the Life of Your Veneers

If you want to make your veneers last as long as possible, you’ll want to refrain from chewing on hard foods like lollipops. You’ll also want to avoid chewing on ice. Consuming anything hard could chip your veneers.

Grinding and clenching your teeth are rough on veneers and can damage them. If you partake in these habits, visit our office. Our dentist can fit you for a mouthguard that prohibits your teeth from touching one another while you sleep.

Don’t Forget Good Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is important with veneers, so make sure you’re brushing and flossing. You also want to visit our dentist for bi-yearly exams and cleanings. Additionally, we can determine if you have any problems with your veneers that we can address.
